ERIC STORZ TRIALS NEWSLETTER - MAY 2011

Hi everyone, Eric here. Well it's that time of year again and the moto trials season is starting to heat up. 2011 has been a very busy year for me so far, with lots of practice, several local trials, and my first PRO class AMA National event already under my belt.
The 2010-11 California SCTA series concluded in March. The season started off well for me with a couple of wins and several 2nd place finishes and I was happy to end on a good note with some strong rides at the end of the season. I ended up in  2nd place overall in the Pro class for the year..
Also in March was the prestigious El Trial De Espana annual event which was held in Anza, CA. Many of the top PRO National caliber riders came out to ride this event and to see where everyone is at before the first AMA National. It was my first competition on my brand new 2011 Gas Gas 300 and the bike was really awesome right off the bat. The big grippy rocks suited me well and I rode my way to a 3rd place finish. I was really happy to make the podium and it was a big confidence boost for the first National of 2011.
Almost two weeks ago I finished my first two AMA Nationals in the PRO class in Bronte, TX. The course was extremely dusty with steep hills and big rock ledges. The  also extreme weather conditions did not help at all. On Saturday it was a scorching 90 plus degrees, then on Sunday the temperature dropped to 45 degrees with lots of wind. I rode well on Saturday, I was very consistent and I put in some really good rides. I was in 4th place for most of the day, but was edged out at the last minute and I ended up 5th. Sunday was tougher for me. I struggled to put together solid rides and I ended up in 7th place. But altogether It was a good learning experience for me and I know what I need to work on.
Up next are the East coast rounds of the National series. Rounds 3 and 4 will be held in Pennsylvania on June 11th and 12th and the series will end with rounds 5,6, and 7 in Tennessee at the end of June. I have been training hard and I'm really looking forward to these events.   Thank you for your continued support. Here are some links to Cycle News coverage of the events I mentioned:

While I was in England last month I went to visit a fellow by the name of John Bull. John retired from a succesful machine shop some time ago and decided to potter about in his workshop by the side of his house in his spare time. He ended up starting a business he named ROCK SHOCKS, making custom Shock Absorbers for Vintage bikes, apparently they are the dogs dangley bits !!! Still not having enough to do he started producing DOT trials bikes. They are all special order and he sells most of them in kit form but if you pay him enough he will put one together for you. John travels all over England ridng vintage trials and often competes in Europe, he last went over to France with Julian Wigg (yes Alexz Wiggs dad) and competed in a 3 day vintage event along with another 400 riders !!!! John Bull, a great guy who now has way more to do than he planned on !!!!

ERIc STORZ RACE REPORT

Sorry for the long silence. Summer is always the busiest time of year for me, with competitions or training almost every weekend. This season the AMA National Trials Championship series made stops in Rhode Island, New York, Colorado and California.

The terrain in Rhode Island was much different than I expected. There were large rocks and slabs with decent traction, which surprised me because I was expecting mostly slick terrain. I rode well both days but each day there was a section or two that gave me trouble. I had podium finishes both days in 3rd position. New York was a much different story. The terrain consisted entirely of large, muddy hill climbs. No rocks, no traction.  I struggled at these two rounds because I am not used to this type if riding as we don’t really have these conditions in the West. My mid pack results were disappointing, but I know what I need to work on for next season.

Next up was Colorado, which I have always liked because the terrain is similar to what I ride at home. The sections were tough on the first day, but I rode well and earned a 3rd place finish. The second day’s trial was easier, which meant that any mistakes would be costly. I finished in 5th place.

The final two rounds of the season were held at Donner Ski Ranch in Northern California, which is one of my favorite places to ride. Saturday did not go as well as I hoped, but I still managed a fourth place finish. I was riding much better on Sunday and after two laps I was within 5 points of the leader. My last lap was not quite good enough and I ended up in 2nd place. This podium finish secured my 3rd place overall in the 2010 Championship.

Next season I plan to move up to the PRO class. It is a big jump from EXP, but I feel that I am ready and I have the whole off-season to improve my skills. I am also excited to train more with my team-mate and newly crowned National Champion Cody Webb.

Thank you very much for your continued support. Here are links to my latest video and a few photos from this year.

Erics Storz Race Report

May 18, 2010

I have just returned from the Columbia Cup Trial. My teammate Cody Webb and I made the long drive from California to Washington State for this event and it was well worth it. The trial was held in Goldendale Washington, which was the sight of the 2001 U.S.A. World Round. The terrain was great, there were large rocks with good traction, but it was very dry and dusty. The Pacific Northwest Trials Association set up an awesome event, the sections were long and technical, but they also had some really big obstacles for those of us riding the top line Champ class. Saturday did not start very well, I got a flat tire on the first section, but I finished out strong and earned a third place finish for the day. I felt like I rode well on Sunday even though I slipped back a position to fourth place. I am looking forward to the next round of the AMA Trials National Championship in Rhode Island, in June. I’ll keep you all updated.

SOCAL news weekend report from keyesville ....... results to follow

Riding sweep, and following Andrew around I was treated to a brilliant
performance of skill and focus ...what a great TRIALS rider he is.

I had no idea what was going on back at camp. When we finally made it back to
camp it reminded me of a Monty Python scene "Bring Out Your Dead" ..... Bikes
were being tossed in the back of trucks and trailers (mine included) like they
had the plague !!! It's a wonder there wasn't a multi truck pile up on the road
out of the place.

A shame it had to end the weekend that way but at least the rangers did not show
up at the riders meeting so I guess we have to be thank full for that.

I love doing the course marshall thing, It is great to see all the riders going
through different sections and generally having a great time up in the
mountains.

Thanks to the 55 riders who entered the event.
Thanks to the sign up crew, Sarah and Karen.
Thanks to the Vote President Chris Cullins who can pack more stuff into an SUV
than a bunch of guys during a WATTS riot.

Thanks to Ian Roberts, Scott and Will Head, Troy Bethel, Randy and Quinn Lewis
and again Chris Cullins who set up all of the great sections.

Thanks to the Checkers: Oli Thordson, Ian Roberts, Nigel Young, Len Simms, Ian
Delaney, Mike Jenkins and Ty Cullins, Scott Head, Damon Barda and son Evan, Will
Head and Carlos Johnston.

Another great weekend of TRIALS riding and a bit of DRAMA thrown in !!

See you in San Diego
